Areola Pigmentation for breast cancer survivors
Areola pigmentation is the process by which a medical tattoo artist implants pigment into the skin surrounding the nipple of a breast following breast & nipple reconstruction due to breast cancer. The medical tattoo artist first draws on the areola using a custom blended pigment color that best matches the patients colouring (same colour as the natural lip colour or existing areola colour), then, after the patient and the medical tattoo artist are satisfied with the size, shape and colour of the new areola, the medical tattoo artist implants the pigment into the skin.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes per side and is usually painless. If the patient feels any discomfort topical anesthetic is applied as needed. There are very few restrictions following the procedure and they are as follows:
- No running or aerobics for one week. Walking or cycling is fine.
- No swimming or jacuzzi for one week.
- The patient will need to keep the treated area occluded with Vaseline or A & D ointment for one week following the procedure.
- Occasionally a second application of pigment is needed in order to achieve the desired result.
Permanent Makeup is a process where color is permanently inserted into the dermal layer of the skin using fine needles dipped in hypo-allergenic pigment (anorganic pigment). Pigments are derived from vegetable products and are either pre-mixed or mixed manually crating a broad palette from which to choose. The pigment bonds to the skin cells and is visible through the translucent outer layer. It is the answer to many people's psychological problems regarding their eyebrows and eyeliners.
